International Museum Day (IMD) takes place on Monday 18 May 2020. The theme selected by ICOM for 2020 is Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion.
To mark IMD2020, ICOM UK and the British Council have developed a programme of events and activities that engage museum workers and audiences in a conversation about diversity and inclusion post-COVID-19:
Think Pieces: We have invited museums leaders from around the world to contribute short reflections or provocations aimed at inspiring new thinking and stimulating action. Scroll down to read Think Pieces written by Gus Casely-Hayford, Director V&A East, Raphael Chikukwa, Acting Director, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and many other influential international sector professionals.
In Conversation: On Monday 18 May, 12:00 – 13:30 BST, ICOM UK hosted three short panel discussions on Zoom with professionals in the sector exploring various threads of the theme including disability and access and digital technology, framed within the current context of COVID-19. Scroll down to watch the recording of the discussion.
Community Crowdsource: During the COVID-19 crisis, ICOM UK invites all members to reflect on what they can do to increase museum diversity and inclusion. Members can post their individual commitments to diversity and inclusion on an online corkboard (Padlet) and via a Twitter campaign. We share these ideas to inspire others to action.
