IMD Think Piece by Dr. Maria Mok, Museum Director, Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA)

The coronavirus-induced lockdown reveals the importance of creativity.  We are amazed by viral creative ideas on social media that play around with art and artistic expressions, amusing, consoling, and healing many; connecting many more who are otherwise isolated.

It also shows the true power of the virtual world and online presence that could spark curiosity and, hopefully, audience growth once we reopen.  Like our international colleagues, the Hong Kong Museum of Art has quickly reacted to this need of online connection by launching “virtually@HKMoA”, a digital platform with a diverse curated offering, reflecting Hong Kong’s cultural legacy and making art more accessible to everybody than ever.

This easy access echoes the theme “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion” of IMD 2020.  At HKMoA, a lead museum of “IMD 2020, HK”, we wish to become a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities and personnel of museums, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.  HKMoA has been lucky enough to be reopened since 6 May, in time to welcome visitors during the “IMD 2020, HK” weekend of 16-17 May 2020, during which 41 museums in Hong Kong will participate.  For those of you who are currently outside of Hong Kong, we will meet you on “virtually@HKMoA”.  Have a great “trip”!
