A proposal is currently being developed for a new European COST Action COST | European Cooperation in Science and Technology entitled ATHENA – Analytical Tools for Heritage Engineering using Non-destructive Assessment. The Principal Investigator, Professor Rhys Pullin from Cardiff University (Director of Industrial and Public Engagement, Cardiff School of Engineering Cardiff University), would be delighted if you would consider joining the network.
ATHENA aims to establish a European interdisciplinary network that brings together museums, heritage organisations, conservators, heritage scientists, engineers, and technology developers to address one of the key challenges facing cultural heritage today: how to better understand, monitor, and preserve fragile and irreplaceable collections using non-invasive, evidence-based approaches. The Action will promote the co-development of practical methodologies by combining conservation expertise with advances in non-destructive evaluation, imaging, analytical chemistry, sensing technologies, artificial intelligence, and data-driven analysis. Central to ATHENA is the principle that conservation practice should guide technological innovation, ensuring that new approaches are practical, ethical, accessible, and responsive to the real needs of museums and heritage professionals.
A COST Action is a four-year European networking programme that brings together researchers, practitioners, industry, and cultural organisations to address a common scientific challenge. Rather than funding research projects directly, COST supports collaboration through workshops, meetings, training schools, Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs), and dissemination activities, enabling participants to build long-term partnerships, share expertise, and develop future research opportunities. Participation offers a number of benefits, including expanding international collaborations, influencing the direction of an emerging field, developing joint publications and future funding proposals, accessing training and networking opportunities, sharing best practice across Europe, and supporting the development of Early Career Researchers through mobility and leadership activities.
At this stage, Professor Pullin is seeking expressions of interest from colleagues who would be willing to contribute their expertise to the network. Contributions may include participating in Working Groups, attending network meetings, sharing knowledge and case studies, hosting or undertaking Short-Term Scientific Missions, supporting training activities, and contributing to collaborative outputs such as best practice guidance, policy recommendations, and future collaborative funding initiatives.
