MAGNET publishes toolkit for touring exhibition partnerships

A new toolkit published by the Museums and Galleries Network for Exhibition Touring (MAGNET) will support other venues across the sector to create and tour partnership exhibitions of their own.

The 12 partner organisations that make up MAGNET have shared their knowledge in a guide that covers everything involved in the creation of joint exhibitions – from partnership agreements to collaborative work content planning and interpretation, and shared approaches to community engagement and environmental responsibility.

Published in seven sections, the free-to-use toolkit is available to download from the Horniman Museum and Gardens’ website. A second toolkit focused on the logistics of touring will also be published by the end of the year.

Georgina Young, currently Acting Director and permanent Head of Collections and Exhibitions at Manchester Museum, says: ‘Our involvement in MAGNET means we’ve worked collaboratively alongside our partners, learning as we go. Together, we have designed the toolkit to be easily adaptable for other organisations looking to work in partnership to develop new exhibitions. We’re happy to share our experience of working together, and we’re looking forward to seeing what other venues co-produce in future.’

MAGNET is currently touring three exhibitions simultaneously:

  • Gender Stories is at its third and final venue, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, from

16 May to 31 August 2026.

  • Colour opens in its fourth of five locations, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter from 23 May to 6 September 2026.
  • Human Natures is currently on show at its second venue, Manchester Museum, until 1 November 2026, with three more outings planned.

The MAGNET partners are:

MAGNET is funded by Arts Council England and Art Fund. A £336,000 Touring Projects grant from Arts Council England, funded by the National Lottery, has enabled the development and touring of the three exhibitions, while £75,000 from Art Fund is helping to fund a three-year full-time MAGNET Coordinator post, to ensure smooth running of the network.

The current phase of the MAGNET partnership has built on a successful trial which saw the Hair: Untold Storiesexhibition tour across three venues (the Horniman, Tullie and Weston Park, Sheffield) from November 2021 to October 2023. A potential third iteration of MAGNET is currently being explored.
