Heritage Survey on Sites of Local History: The Case of an Ecomuseum

In this talk, our invited speaker Wu Chun-Yun will demonstrate the fascinating case of heritage survey with Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum (DWAE) in Taoyuan, Taiwan, explaining how the concept of ecomuseum, which has been imported from Europe, is applied pragmatically in a Taiwanese town to preserve local tradition within the local community.
The talk is composed of three parts. First, she will describe the background of the DWAE, its exhibition system, and its collaborations with “corner houses” (including local shop owners and artisans). Second, she will demonstrate the case of “Quan Chang Tang Dental Clinic” (全昌堂齒科診所), a heritage site run by the Lin family for over 100 years, to elaborate on the experimental concept of “on-site collection/preservation”. The case has become a legacy preserving multiple aspects of local culture with diverse objects and abundant stories in central Daxi. The last section will focus on the curatorial process, including co-writing family history, researching historical materials and archiving narratives of the family. The case reveals a bottom-top energy for demonstrating how curatorial practice can be achieved by applying methods with the idea of ecomuseum.

Wu Chun-Yun is a freelance curator based in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, specialising in museum techniques and curatorial practice with historical objects. Her work deals with re-organisations of heritages collected by local museums, research centres, public institutions and private collectors. Chun-Yun holds a MA in Museum Studies from the Taipei National University of the Arts. She is an experienced curator engaging in local histories with museological approaches. She organised several exhibitions at Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum with closely investigating local family stories and material culture. Since 2015, her fieldwork in Daxi has been outstanding in approaching local history and continuing to discover unknown cultural resources that enrich historical narratives.
