At the end of last year, the Government published its Independent Review of Arts Council England. ACE’s Response sets out the work we will do to address the feedback you have given and recommendations made.
The Government’s Independent Review of Arts Council England, chaired by Baroness Hodge of Barking, was a year in the making, and is grounded in conversations, interviews, and roundtables that were held all over the country. It is a serious piece of work, and we take it seriously. We welcome the important challenges it presents around how the Arts Council must change. We’re heartened by its clear account of the values we need to hold on to. And we’re excited by the platform it gives us to go further in modernising and simplifying the way we work.
Our role, as a national development agency, is to support England’s exceptional artists and cultural organisations to flourish, innovate, and deliver excellent work – and to ensure that everyone across the country has access to that work, as well as the chance to develop their own creativity, in the places where they live. Our aim, as we move deeper into the 21st century, is to ensure that the unique value and broad benefits of art and culture are seen and celebrated, and to make the case that their public funding, which has been a cornerstone of government policy since the second world war, is not just retained, but reinforced. To fulfil both, we will use our deep artform expertise to provide the best possible service to those who work with us, underpinned by the tenets of diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity that those who contributed to the Review resoundingly endorsed. And we will work with artists, cultural organisations, public and private sector partners, and citizens to foster a future where creativity and culture sit at the heart of society, shaping our country and the lives of its people for the better.
