Teesside University is introducing a new MBA Cultural and Creative Leader which is also a Level 7 apprenticeship for museum staff. Alongside its pioneering MA Curating used by organisations including Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, Tate and regional museums from Cornwall to Northumbria, this new course also utilises the government levy so there is no or little cost to organisations. Learning is hybrid through online seminars and intensive weeks in London or Middlesbrough.
The next courses start in January 2025 and the deadline to sign up is in November 2024. MA Curating is not subject specific, it is applicable to a range of jobs with public engagement at the heart and open to cultural, creative, heritage, media, environmental sectors and beyond.
The MBA Cultural and Creative Leader uniquely combines the Senior Leader Apprenticeship (SLA) and an MBA (Master of Business Administration) outside of a top up route. This course utilises the innovative and successful design and delivery structure of the MA Curating apprenticeship and takes just over two years. Through our MIMA Research Unit and a range of partners and collaborators, there are a wide range of cultural and creative leadership experience, with modules on Conflict and Care, Competition and Collaboration, and Reflexivity and Resilience.
This apprenticeship initiative is part of MIMA Research Unit based at Teesside University’s international art gallery and museum, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. The Unit address the role of creative practice in topics including nature recovery; heritage action; digital museum, learning and experience design; cultural policy and leadership; equitable environmentalism; storytelling democracies and inclusive cultural activism. Researchers develop socially engaged practice-based artistic and curatorial projects across a range of contexts and sectors including cultural, technology, housing, health, education and environmental. Consultancy is also offered in a range of subject expertise areas to the GLAM sector.
Contact Prof Sarah Perks on s.perks@tees.ac.uk for more information and also see the recent Arts Professional article about how these widen access for the sector. You can upskill existing staff or add apprenticeships to new posts, this is the UK government apprenticeship scheme operating in England only. The master’s courses in Curating and Cultural and Creative Leader are uniquely developed for the Level 7 apprenticeship standards for Curator and Senior Leader respectively. This means the courses are awarding both a master’s degree and a Level 7 apprenticeship.
