ICOM–INTERPOL Survey, Assessment of Security Measures in Museums

This article was first published by ICOM.

Museum theft has recently received increased attention within the museum community, the media and the public. In response, in November 2025, ICOM launched a joint operational initiative with INTERPOL that aims to target museums worldwide, support them in strengthening their security systems and strengthen joint efforts to prevent the theft and illicit movement of cultural objects. This initiative was announced during ICOM’s 27th General Conference in Dubai.

“ICOM remains fully committed to advancing strategies and operational measures aimed at protecting cultural property and combating illicit trafficking. A key priority is the development and deployment of digital tools that enhance prevention, monitoring, and response capacities for museums and cultural institutions worldwide”. Medea S. Ekner, ICOM Director General, Dubai, November 2025

ICOM invites its individual and institutional members (museums) to participate in a global survey. This survey marks the initial step to our initiative to assess the security measures currently in place within museums. The survey will focus in particular on theft and burglary. The insights gathered from this survey will help shape future initiatives to help museums to develop their security measures.

ICOM encourages you to take part in this survey, and we thank you in advance for your response! Please note that all responses are anonymous, and no data will be traceable to individual museums.
