European Museum of the Year Award 2017 – Winner announced

On 6 May 2017 the EMYA and the Council of Europe Museum Prize were presented for the 40th time. The MEG – Museum of Ethnography, Geneva, Switzerland received the EMYA trophy, The Egg by Henry Moore.

The Musée d'ethnographie de Genève was recognised for its ability to transform its mission and respond openly and in new ways to a diverse audience.
Next to the EMYA Award three further prizes were presented during the ceremony.
Special recognition for relating the narrative of its theme to the present the Mémorial ACTe, Caribbean Centre of Expressions and Memory of the Slave Trade and Slavery, Guadeloupe, France was the winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize.
With the Silletto Prize the Leiria Museum in Leiria, Portugal was honored for the engagement with its community, while the Museum of the first president of Russia Boris Yeltsin in Yekaterinburg, Russia received the Kenneth Hudson Award.
Special Commendations were given to the Visitor Centre of the Swiss Ornithological Institute Sempach (Switzerland), the Museum of Confluences (France), York Art Gallery (UK), Muzeum Slaskie (Poland), Heraklion Archaeological Museum (Greece) and the Old Town National Open Air Museum of Urban History and Culture Aarhus (Denmark).
This year the Award ceremony was celebrated together with a ceremony for the 40th anniversary of the European Museum of the Year Award and the Council of Europe Museum Prize in Zagreb, Croatia. The celebrations included a three day conference from 3-6 May 2017 ahead of the ceremony. On 6 May, David Vuillaume, the chair of the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO), joined a panel on "Museums as hubs for the society of well-being".
